Prayerlessness is a plague in the body of Christ; however,
effective, fervent prayer takes heaven by storm!
Many have said that John Wesley's prayers changed the face
of England far more than his preaching. Most of our godly
forefathers such as George Mueller, Hudson Taylor, and Rees
Howells spent about one-fourth of their entire days [8
hours] in prayer.
James, a man nicknamed "camel knees," repeatedly writes
about prayer. In chapter 1, he urges prayer for those who
lack wisdom. In chapter 4, he suggests that arguments and
quarrels were the result of not "asking" in prayer. In
chapter 5, he mentions prayer seven times.
In James 5:13, we read that prayer is for the 'afflicted.'
That means, those who are smitten with trouble, should pray
for strength until relief comes. In verses 14-15, prayer is
essential for those who are physically ill by calling on the
spiritual leaders of the church to come to him.
James writes of those who struggle with the need to confess
their faults to one another. It is easy to assume that those
who were bedridden might, in many cases, have needed to
confess sins of the heart before receiving healing.
"The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish
much." So, how does our prayer become effective?
[1] We must pray according to biblical truth. [2] We must
pray with specific results in mind. [3] We must pray in
faith, being confident that our Father in heaven hears and
answers.
Prayer is not to be used simply for emergencies. Neither is
it a substitute for acting responsibly. Prayer is for those
of us who are not perfect, but are in great need of our
Father's intervention on behalf of us and others we care
for.
